A Planners Guide to Doomsday:
We believe that the best defense is a good defense, and that in a doomsday scenario, going on the offense is very close to suicidal. That is why the homes we design are meticulously planned out to survive end of the world scenarios. For the safety of your loved ones and yourself, preppers should prepare to survive in their homes. This is because not only are you familiar with the territory and the people, but you can take more time to train and prepare in the place where you plan to ride out the storm. Here is an excerpt for James Rawles book "How to Survive the End of the World as we know it." Page 19 - The Best Defense: Live at Your Retreat Year-Round
"An eleventh-hour Get Out of Dodge (G.O.O.D.) is a bad idea. Even if you have 90 percent of your gear pre-positioned at your retreat, there is the prospect of never making it there safely. Or if you arrive days or weeks late, on foot, you may find your retreat occupied by armed squatters who are gleefully eating from your carefully planned deep larder. Being forced to abandon a vehicle and travel on foot is a dicey proposition, at best."
We realize that it might not be financially feasible for you to afford a Doomsday Dwelling so, if you don't already have a full system in place, we have listed the basics here to get you started: Food, Water, Shelter. *This list in only intended for educational and overview purposes only. Please research and prepare extensively on your own. |
FoodIn order to survive you will need a combination of short term and long term food storage.
Short Term Food Survival 1) Ready to eat meals are an excellent way to ensure survival for the first five years of a crisis. I suggest you start with a one year supply for you and your family. FoodInsurance.com lets you know how much food you will need, and how long that food will last on their main page. Not only is their food delicious, it is conveniently packed and packaged for easy storage. 2) A recurring health tip throughout the ages has been to eat fresh food, but in a crisis you can not afford to wait months to plant, grow, and harvest fresh produce. What one needs is fresh greens, rich in nutrients and enzymes, and the healthiest way to get these nutrients in a doomsday situation is with fresh sprouts. A benefit of sprouts is that you don't need much space to grow them, they are simple and fast to grow, and they can sprout year round. A surprising benefit of sprouts is a 3-day old broccoli sprout has 20-50 times more antioxidant properties than mature broccoli. One option for you is from Heirloom Organics (pictured on the right). Take a look and see if it fits your needs. Long Term Food Survival To survive long term you are going to need seeds. Seeds are not only essential to creating a sustainable society, they can also be used as currency and bartering. The best packages I have found are from Survival Seeds. Their seeds allow the gardener to collect seeds grow a crop for future planting. They have four different sizes that can accommodate your needs: Seed Vault - 2 People. Family Pack - 4 People. Homestead - 8 People. Farm Pack - 16+ People. Buy more than you think to allow for bartering and some failure. Also consider purchasing their Grain Pack and Tobacco Pack. Beer and Tobacco might come in handy in the future. Go to Survival Seeds to get started. I suggest starting a kitchen garden or a victory garden right away. Why, because in a crisis you want to eliminate as many big learning curves as you can. I have my own small garden and not only is the spinach, the onions and the tomatoes the best I have ever had... I have also learned that starting from seed is harder than you think, and by starting now you will have all of the equipment you need to start your garden when you truly need it. |

WaterWater is essential to survival, approximately a gallon a day per person is needed to survive. Your best bet is to be located near a naturally occurring spring. In light of that, you are going to either need to store or you are going to need to find your own water.
If you have the option, I suggest buying and burying one large storage tank that is linked to your home water system. Be sure to contact an installation professional and your local building department. If that is not an option, you are going to have to find and filter your own water. Option one: look up home-made water filtration devices that use sand and activated charcoal for a long term high volume solution. Option two: purchase a professionally made filtration system. This will guarantee you have safe clean drinking water. Watch the video to the right. I have personally bought the LifeSaver Jerrycan, and I will post a blog about it in the future. I can say I am very happy with the system. |

ShelterI believe prepping should be a supplement to your life while not consuming your entire life. I might catch some flack for that statement from some of the fanatics, but I believe that life should be lived and enjoyed, not fully devoted to preparing for the future. That is why I believe you should live in your survival shelter in order to make preping easier and comfortable for you and your loved ones. So if you do not choose one of our dwelling designs, make sure you have taken care of the following shelter essentials:
Reinforce your house where you can, be sure to have a plan to seal your home from the environment. Have at least one (preferably two) backups for heat and power, and stock up on tools and materials for rebuilding, not to mention the food, water and safety suggestions located on this page. |
safety
If you could only have one weapon for defense what would it be? Think about it, you only have one device for fending off intruders from both close distance and long distance and for shooting game. What would it be...?
Your all purpose security weapon should be a shotgun. The reason for this is three fold: 1) Bird shot will stop an intruder, yet it will not go though walls and injure innocent bystanders like children. 2) Slugs can be used in order to shoot large game at longer distances. 3) Bird shot can also be used for birds, of course, and a bonus 4) No one wants to mess with a person with a shotgun |
3 Key Security Rules:
1) Defense, defense, defense 2) Build a team of experts that you can trust 3) Set up a community with standards of: sanitation, fairness, and community. Please become extremely familiar with the maintenance and operation of any firearm you may use (safety first), and visit your local sporting goods store for tactical equipment. Also check out the Crovel. P.S. My second and third weapons of choice are : the AR-16, and a Springfield Armory XDM Handgun. The safety features on the handgun are phenomenal Sign up below for alerts when more in dept articles are available. |
